The Neverending Website Project… Ends
May 20 2008
So, the website’s done. Cue the balloon drop.
Those of you who check this space from time to time must have thought this day would never come. You may, in fact, be reading this post after being defibrillated. Sorry about that.
I must admit, there are some things I’ll miss about not having a website. Like what? The jokes about the cobbler’s kids having no shoes, for one. Those never get old.
I was also thinking about what the public might have thought upon visiting the old “coming soon” site. I came up with this list:
Top Five Conclusions One Could Have Reasonably Drawn from the Long-Delayed Launch of AltonCreative.com
- They’re obviously so busy they can’t do their own site. Questionable, but still somewhat impressive.
- Since the web is a nothing but a series of tubes, this particular tube must be blocked.
- Alton Creative is a shell corporation for some nefarious entity.
- Ed is not particulary busy and takes frequent naps.
- Ed’s dead.
I’m happy to report that none of the above are even remotely true. While #1 does come closest, it’s really no excuse. Truth is, I’ve been working on this site for years, but the pursuit of perfection is a fool’s chase. “Perfect,” I once read, “is the enemy of the good.” True words indeed.
Regrets? A few. Mostly the impression of inept enterprise this site has portrayed. Nothing could be further from the truth. On the bright side, I do pat myself on the back for running a profitable business for ten years without a web presence. Though I can’t recommend that to everyone.
So what have I been doing for the past ten years? Let’s see… Well, I’ve spent far more time doing the actual work than promoting myself, that’s for sure. I’ve also worked with some great clients, done some work I’m proud of and had an all-around good time doing it. Way more than any person deserves to while earning a living.
So here it is in all its glory: AltonCreative.com. An address I can finally say proudly and without a twinge of regret or awkward qualifiers about the site that’s “coming soon.”
I like to think of it as a little backyard garden. A mere square of soil, combed lengthwise with rows of patient seeds lying in wait. But slowly those seeds will split and their greens will burst and uncoil, tumbling over the margins. And the blossoms will yield to fruit and the fruit will burst and yield back to the soil. Should be quite a show. Maybe enough to have a seat near and take in with a beer, listening to the drone of all that churning life. That’s my hope, anyways.
But for now it’s just a box of dirt. Don’t rush me.
